Keracunan oleh agen saraf menyebabkan penguncupan murid, penyembuhan berleluasa, konvulsi, kencing yang tidak disengajakan dan buang air besar, dan akhirnya kematian akibat asfiksia sebagai kawalan hilang ke atas otot pernafasan. Sesetengah agen saraf mudah menguap atau aerosolisasi dan portal utama masuk ke dalam badan adalah sistem pernafasan.
