Rabaul adalah sebuah bandar di provinsi New East Britain, Papua New Guinea. Pekan ini adalah ibu kota dan penempatan paling penting di wilayah itu sehingga ia musnah pada tahun 1994 akibat abu letusan gunung berapi. Semasa letusan itu, abu dihantar beribu-ribu meter ke udara dan abu hujan seterusnya menyebabkan 80% bangunan di Rabaul runtuh. Selepas letusan itu ibu kota dipindahkan ke Kokopo, kira-kira 20 kilometer jauhnya. Rabaul sentiasa terancam oleh aktiviti gunung berapi kerana dibina di pinggir kaldera Rabaul, sebuah kaldera yang dibanjiri perisai piroklastik yang besar. Rabaul dikenali sebagai Simpsonhafen semasa pemerintahan Jerman Baru Guinea yang menguasai kawasan itu antara 1884 dan secara rasmi hingga 1919. Dari tahun 1910 Rabaul adalah markas Jerman Baru Guinea sehingga ditangkap oleh Empayar Britania semasa Perang Dunia I, ketika menjadi ibu kota Australia yang diberi mandat Wilayah New Guinea sehingga tahun 1937 apabila ia mula-mula dimusnahkan oleh gunung berapi. Semasa Perang Dunia II, ia ditangkap oleh orang Jepun pada tahun 1942, dan ia menjadi pangkalan utama tentera Jepun dan aktiviti tentera laut di Pasifik Selatan.
