Rupee adalah nama biasa bagi mata wang India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mauritius, Seychelles, Maldives, Indonesia, dan dahulunya orang-orang Burma dan Afghanistan. Secara sejarah, mata wang pertama yang dipanggil "rupiya" diperkenalkan pada abad ke-16 oleh Sher Shah Suri, pengasas Sur Empire of Northern India. Istilah ini berasal dari rūpya, istilah Sanskrit untuk duit syiling perak, dari Sanskrit rūpá, bentuk yang indah.
