Sikkim adalah negeri India yang terkurung di pergunungan Himalaya. Negara ini bersempadan dengan Nepal di barat, Wilayah Tibet Autonomi China di utara dan timur, dan Bhutan di timur. Negeri Bengal Barat terletak di selatan. Mengikut legenda, guru Buddhis Padmasambhava mengunjungi Sikkim pada abad ke-8 AD, memperkenalkan Buddhisme dan meramalkan era pemerintahan monarki Sikkim. Dinasti Namgyal Sikkim ditubuhkan pada tahun 1642. Dalam 150 tahun akan datang, kerajaan menyaksikan kerap kali serbuan dan kerugian wilayah ke penjajah Nepal.
