Streptococcus adalah genus bakteria Gram-positif sfera yang dimiliki oleh Firmicutes filum dan kumpulan bakteria asid laktik. Bahagian selular berlaku sepanjang paksi tunggal dalam bakteria ini, dan oleh itu mereka tumbuh di rantai atau pasang, maka nama-dari Greek στρεπτός streptos, yang bermaksud mudah dibengkokkan atau berpintal, seperti rantai.
