Istilah Dunia Ketiga timbul semasa Perang Dingin untuk menentukan negara-negara yang tetap tidak selaras dengan baik NATO, atau Blok Komunis. Istilah ini memberikan satu cara yang luas untuk mengkategorikan negara-negara Bumi ke dalam tiga kumpulan berdasarkan bahagian sosial, politik, budaya dan ekonomi. Dunia Ketiga biasanya dilihat termasuk banyak negara dengan penjajah penjajah di Afrika, Amerika Latin, Oceania dan Asia. Ia juga kadang kala diambil sebagai sinonim dengan negara-negara dalam Gerakan Non-Blok. Teori ketergantungan yang dipanggil oleh golongan pemikir seperti Raul Prebisch, Walter Rodney, Theotonio dos Santos, dan Andre Gunder Frank, Dunia Ketiga juga telah dihubungkan dengan bahagian ekonomi dunia sebagai negara "pinggir" dalam sistem dunia yang didominasi oleh negara-negara "teras".
