Thon Buri adalah kawasan Bangkok moden. Semasa zaman kerajaan Ayutthaya, lokasinya di tebing kanan di mulut Sungai Chao Phraya telah menjadikannya sebuah kota garnisun yang penting, yang tercermin dalam namanya: Thon adalah kata pinjaman dari kekayaan Pali dhána; Buri, dari kubu púra. Selepas karung Burma di Ayutthaya pada tahun 1767, Raja Taksin mendirikan kerajaan Thonburi pada tahun 1768, dengan Thon Buri sebagai ibukotanya sehingga tahun 1782. Pada tahun 1950, Bangkok mempunyai kira-kira 1.3 juta orang, dan perbandaran Thon Buri sekitar 400,000. Pada tahun 1970 Thon Buri adalah bandar kedua terbesar Thailand dengan sekitar 600,000 penduduk.
