Apoptosis Ia adalah satu bentuk kematian sel yang dikawal oleh gen yang membezakannya daripada nekrosis sel atau nekrosis, kematian patologi. Apoptosis bertanggungjawab untuk membentuk bentuk tubuh semasa pembangunan, dan bertanggungjawab untuk memperbaharui sel normal atau mengeluarkan sel-sel dengan kelainan pada badan dewasa. Ia berbeza dengan kematian sel diprogram (PCD), yang merupakan proses yang sama berlaku dalam kematian sel kanser, jangkitan virus, dadah, dan radiasi dalam sel-sel kanser. 아포토시스
세포(細胞)가 유전자에 의해 제어되어 죽는 방식의 한 형태로 세포의 괴사나 병적인 죽음인 네크로시스와는 구별된다. 아포토시스는 발생 과정에서 몸의 형태 만들기를 담당하고, 성체에서는 정상적인 세포를 갱신하거나 이상이 생긴 세포를 제거하는 일을 담당하고 있다. 암 세포 내의 세포 소실, 바이러스 감염과 약물, 방사선 등에서 일어나는 점은 유사한 과정인 프로그램 세포사(PCD:programmed cell death)와 다른 점이다.
