Biom

Dalam bidang ekologi, biom ialah kumpulan setempat besar yang terdiri daripada komuniti tumbuhan dan haiwan yang paling tersesuai dengan persekitaran alam, latitud, aras tinggi dan rupa bumi yang zahir di kawasan berkenaan. Sesebuah biom terdiri daripada kawasan ekologi atau komuniti yang berada dalam keadaan tetap dan stabil, dan segala tumbuh-tumbuhan, fauna dan tanih yang berkenaan, baik dalam peralihan, diganggu ataupun didegradasi, tetapi selalu juga boleh dikenal pasti dengan jenis vegetasi klimaksnya. Ciri-ciri biodiversiti setiap biom, terutamanya kepelbagaian fauna dan bentuk tumbuhan yang subdominan, merupakan satu fungsi faktor-faktor abiotik serta daya keluaran biojisim tumbuh-tumbuhan yang dominan. Terdapat dua kategori biom iaitu: ▪ Biom daratan ▪ Biom air Biom lebih dikenali dengan nama setempatnya. Contohnya, biom tanah rumput atau semak beriklim sederhana dikenali sebagai steppe di Asia Tengah, prairie di Amerika Utara, dan pampas di Amerika Selatan. Padang rumput tropika pula dikenali sebagai savana di Australia, atau veldt di Afrika Selatan.
