DVD

DVD ialah sejenis format media storan cakera optik yang popular. Kegunaan utamanya termasuk penyimpanan video dan data. Kebanyakan DVD sama dimensinya dengan cakera padat tetapi boleh menyimpan enam kali lebih data berbanding CD. Kelainan-kelainan istilah DVD selalu menghuraikan cara data disimpan dalam cakera: DVD-ROM mengandungi data yang hanya boleh dibaca dan tidak boleh ditulis, DVD-R dan DVD+R boleh ditulis sekali kemudian berfungsi seperti DVD-ROM, manakala DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, atau DVD+RW pula menyimpan data yang boleh dipadam dan ditulis semula banyak kali. Jarak gelombang yang digunakan oleh laser DVD biasa adalah 650 nm. Cakera-cakera DVD-Video dan DVD-Audio masing-masing merupakan kandungan video dan audio yang diformat dan distrukturkan dengan sebetulnya. Jenis-jenis DVD yang lain, termasuk yang mengandungi video, boleh dipanggil cakera DVD-Data. Istilah "DVD" selalunya disalahgunakan untuk memaksudkan format cakera optik definisi tinggi secara amnya, seperti Blu-ray dan HD DVD. Kesannya, DVD yang asal kadang-kala dipanggil SD DVD.
