Kapit meliputi kawasan pedalaman selepas bahagian Sibu. Luas kawasannya adalah 38,934 km persegi. Kawasan pentadbiran bahagian Kapit merangkumi daerah Kapit, Belaga dan Song. Ketiga-tiga daerah ini ditadbir oleh Majlis Daerah Kapit. Jumlah penduduk di bawah pentadbiran majlis daerah ini berdasarkan banci tahun 2000 adalah 98,841 orang. Jumlah penduduk untuk daerah Kapit sahaja berjumlah 56,709 orang. Majoriti penduduk Kapit terdiri daripada kaum Iban diikuti kaum Cina dan Melayu. Kapit amat terkenal dengan hasil buah dabai dan durian. Bandar Kapit terletak di tepi sungai Rejang. Ia boleh dihubungi melalui sungai menggunakan perkhidmatan bot ekspres. Kubu Kapit pada tahun 1880 sebagai bandar garrison, ia bertujuan untuk menyekat masyarakat Iban dari berpindah ke seberang sungai dan seterusnya menyerang penempatan perkampungan Orang Ulu. Kemudian kubu tersebut dinamai semula sebagai
Kubu Sylvia atau, sempena mengambil nama isteri Rajah Vyner Brooke, tetapi bandar tersebut mengekalkan namanya sebagai Kapit.
