sperma diperoleh daripada perkataan bahasa Yunani
sperma dan merujuk sel pembiakan jantan. Dalam jenis pembiakan seks dikenali sebagai anisogami dan oogami, ada perbezaan saiz bertanda gamet dengan yang lebih kecil beristilahkan sel "jantan" atau sperma. Sperma uniflagelum yang motil dirujuk sebagai
spermatozoon, sementara sel sperma tidak motil dirujuk sebagai
spermatium. Sel sperma tidak boleh berbahagi dan mempunyai jangka hayat terhad, tetapi selepas pelakuran dengan sel telur semasa persenyawaan, organisma baharu mula berkembang, bermula sebagai zigot totipoten. Sel sperma manusia adalah haploid, maka 23 kromosomnya boleh mencantumi 23 kromosom telur betina untuk membentuk sel diploid. Pada mamalia, sperma berkembang di dalam buah zakar dan dikeluarkan dari zakar. Mungkin juga untuk mengeluarkan sperma melalui TESE.
