Dhaka adalah ibukota Bangladesh, dengan kira-kira 7 juta penduduk. Pusat utama pakaian, tekstil, makanan dan industri metalurgi, perdagangan jute, beras, minyak, gula dan teh. Universiti Dhaka, BUET dan pusat penyelidikan lain serta institut penyelidikan pertanian berpusat di bandar. Kawasan sekitarnya sangat padat dan terdedah kepada banjir monsun besar.

Historia Dhaki sięga roku 1000, ale sławę uzyskała jako stolica mogolskiego Bengalu. W pewnym momencie nazwana Dżahangir Nagar na cześć władcy mogolskiego Dżahangira. Miasto przeszło pod władzę Wielkiej Brytanii w roku 1765. W 1947 r. zostało stolicą Pakistanu Wschodniego, a w 1971 r. stolicą tymczasowego rządu niepodległego Bangladeszu. Uniwersytet w Dhace, BUET i inne ośrodki naukowe oraz instytuty badań rolniczych mają swe siedziby w mieście. Otaczający obszar jest bardzo gęsto zaludniony i narażony na duże monsunowe powodzie.
