Koin emas pepejal dari Rom. Diperkenalkan sekitar 308 oleh maharaja Rom Constantine I. Berat 3.89 gram dan berpadanan dengan 1/72 pon emas. Bita w cesarstwie rzymskim, a później w kontynuującym jego tradycje cesarstwie bizantyjskim. Do końca X wieku solid był główną monetą handlową Bizancjum, powszechnie nazywany tam nomisma. Znana też w szerszym obiegu jako bizant, moneta ta należała do najważniejszych środków płatniczych Europy i krajów Morza Śródziemnego do połowy XI wieku. Najpierw zastąpił ją wartościowszy złoty histamenon, a następnie przeprowadzona przez cesarza Aleksego I Komnena reforma monetarna wprowadziła hyperpyron jako najważniejszą monetę handlową Bizancjum. Od nazwy solidus wywodzą się liczne późniejsze nazwy pieniądza: sou, soldo, szyling, szeląg. Od nazwy tej pochodzą również słowa: żołnierz, soldier, soldado, солдат itp.
