Karsinoma adalah tumor ganas yang terbentuk dari sel epitel, kelenjar atau trophoblast yang cenderung menyerang tisu pekeliling menyebabkan metastasis. Luka-luka seperti karsinoma yang paling biasa adalah kulit, mulut, paru-paru, payudara, perut, serviks, prostat, dan zakar. Teks ini menangani semata-mata sejenis jenis kanser kulit tertentu. Walaupun kadar insiden yang tinggi, kanser kulit bukan melanoma memberikan kadar penyembuhan yang tinggi terutamanya disebabkan oleh kemudahan diagnosis awal. Karsinoma sel basal berasal dari epidermis dan pelapik kulit di atas lapisan basal, seperti rambut, contohnya. Karsinoma epidermoid berasal dari keratinocyte epidermis, dan juga boleh muncul di epitel skuamus membran mukus. Individu yang bekerja dengan pendedahan langsung kepada matahari lebih terdedah kepada kanser kulit nonmelanoma. Jenis kanser ini lebih biasa pada orang dewasa dengan puncak kejadian sekitar umur 40 tahun. O carcinoma é um tumor maligno desenvolvido a partir de células epiteliais, glandulares ou do trofoblasto que tende a invadir tecidos circulares originando metástases. Os locais mais comuns de lesões do tipo carcinoma são pele, boca, pulmão, mama, estômago, colo de útero, próstata e pênis. Esse texto aborda exclusivamente um tipo específico de câncer de pele. Apesar das altas taxas de incidência, o câncer de pele não melanoma apresenta altos índices de cura principalmente devido à facilidade do diagnóstico precoce. Os carcinomas do tipo basocelular são originários da epiderme e dos apêndices cutâneos acima da camada basal, como os pelos, por exemplo. Já os carcinomas epidermoides têm origem no queratinócito da epiderme, podendo também surgir no epitélio escamoso das mucosas. Indivíduos que trabalham com exposição direta ao sol são mais vulneráveis ao câncer de pele não melanoma. Esse tipo de câncer é mais comum em adultos com picos de incidência por volta dos 40 anos. Porém, com a constante exposição de jovens aos raios solares a média de idade dos pacientes tem vindo a diminuir.
