LSD adalah akronim untuk Lysergsäurediethylamid, perkataan Jerman untuk diethylamide asid lysergik, yang merupakan salah satu bahan halusinogen yang paling kuat yang diketahui. LSD, atau lebih tepatnya LSD25, adalah sebatian kristal, yang berlaku secara semulajadi akibat reaksi metabolik kulat Claviceps purpurea, yang berkaitan terutama dengan alkaloid yang dihasilkan oleh ergot ini. Ia pertama kali disintesis pada tahun 1938, dan pada tahun 1943 ahli kimia Swiss Albert Hofmann, ketika bekerja di Sandoz, secara tidak sengaja menemui kesannya, dari mana ia menjadi bersemangat hingga kematiannya pada usia 102 tahun. Foi sintetizado pela primeira vez em 1938 e, em 1943, o químico suíço Albert Hofmann, enquanto trabalhava na Sandoz, acidentalmente descobriu os seus efeitos, de que se tornou entusiasta até sua morte aos 102 anos. Causa alterações sensoriais de variação inesgotável e imprevisível, um dado facilmente verificável em relatos da literatura médica de sua fase de testes iniciais adiante. Hoffman, também responsável por isolar diversos outros princípios ativos de medicamentos até hoje amplamente utilizados, sempre condenou o uso irresponsável e/ou ignorante dessa substância por indivíduos despreparados, que erroneamente crêem tratar-se de uma droga meramente prazerosa ou recreativa.
