Dalam mekanik kuantum spin istilah dikaitkan, tanpa keteguhan, kepada orientasi yang mungkin bahawa zarah-zarah subatomik yang dipertanggungkan sebagai proton, elektron dan beberapa nukleus atom boleh hadir apabila direndam dalam medan magnet. Walaupun istilah ini timbul dari idea bahawa elektron "berputar" di sekeliling mereka, dan walaupun secara amnya dikaitkan dengan idea momen magnetik zarah sekali dikenakan zarah, apabila dalam gerakan putaran, dengan cara yang sama seperti revolusi wayar yang diliputi oleh arus elektrik, menghasilkan medan magnet, penerangan ini tidak sesuai untuk neutron, yang tidak mempunyai caj elektrik; juga tidak dapat menjelaskan nilai putaran diamati dalam nukleus atom tertentu, misalnya 7/2 untuk U235. Dalam kes ini, istilah spin hanya dianggap sebagai nombor kuantum keempat, yang diperlukan untuk definisi keadaan kuantum zarah-zarah ini apabila dalam keadaan tenaga diskrit dalam sistem terkurung, misalnya dalam orbital dalam atom atau dalam keadaan tenaga dalam gas fermion .

Em mecânica quântica o termo spin associa-se, sem rigor, às possíveis orientações que partículas subatômicas carregadas como protões, electrões e alguns núcleos atómicos podem apresentar quando imersas em um campo magnético. Embora o termo tenha surgido da ideia de que os elétrons "giravam" em torno de si mesmos, e embora geralmente associado à ideia de momento magnético das partículas uma vez que partículas carregadas, quando em movimento de rotação, da mesma forma que uma volta de fio percorrido por uma corrente elétrica, produzem campos magnéticos, esta descrição não é adequada para os nêutrons, que não possuem carga elétrica; também não é capaz de explicar valores de spin observados em certos núcleos atômicos, a exemplo 7/2 para o U235. Nestes casos, o termo spin é encarado simplesmente como um quarto número quântico, necessário à definição dos estados quânticos destas partículas quando em estados discretos de energia em sistemas confinados, a exemplo nos orbitais em um átomo ou nos estados de energia em um gás de férmions.
