Hemoglobin adalah protein yang membawa oksigen ke tisu dari organ pernafasan yang menenangkan, dan karbon dioksida dan proton dari tisu ke saluran pernafasan. Ia dijumpai dalam erythrocytes. Mengikat oksigen dengan kedua-dua molekul yang mengandungi +2 zat besi. Tapak sintesis utama adalah sumsum tulang semasa pengeluaran erythrocyte. Perbezaan kecil dalam umur, jantina dan spesies juga merupakan anemia yang berada di bawah nilai tertentu, dan polycythemia diketahui hadir dalam jumlah yang tinggi.
