Matrymonialne lub matczyne sukcesy odnoszą się do przenoszenia i przekazywania cech społecznych i posiadania wyłącznie przez linię żeńską od matek do córek. Söhne werden in der mütterlichen Erbfolge nicht berücksichtigt, da sie die Linie ihrer Mutter nicht eigenständig fortsetzen können: Nach einer Heirat werden Kinder zur Familie der Ehefrau gezählt, sie tragen ihren Familiennamen und führen ihre Linie weiter, nicht die Linie des Ehemanns oder seiner Mutter. Eine rein matrilineare Abstammungsreihe enthält alle in einer ununterbrochenen weiblichen Abfolge von einer „Stammmutter“ herstammenden Frauen, dabei spielt die Frage der Ehelichkeit von Nachkommen keine Rolle. Diese Linie wird auch als uterine Deszendenz bezeichnet, früher auch als „mutterrechtlich“.
