W związku z tym zaleca się wycofanie stosowania epitetów o wysokich organizmach Gram + G Gram-dodatnich w odniesieniu do Actinobacteria. Mogą być naziemne lub wodne. Chociaż rozumiane przede wszystkim jako bakterie glebowe, mogą być bogatsze w słodkowodnych. Actinobacteria jest jedną z dominujących fyli bakteryjnych i zawiera jeden z największych rodzajów bakterii Streptomyces. Sugerowano analizę sekwencji syntetazy glutaminy w celu analizy filogenetycznej Actinobacteria. Chociaż niektóre z największych i najbardziej złożonych komórek bakteryjnych należą do Actinobacteria, grupa morskich Actinomarinales została opisana jako posiadająca najmniejsze, wolne do życia komórki prokariotyczne.
