Ammonity / æmənaɪts / są wymarłą grupą bezkręgowców morskich w podklasie Ammonoidea klasy Cephalopoda. Te mięczaki są ściślej związane z żyjącymi kokilami, niż mają na celu utylizację nautiloidów, takich jak żyjące gatunki Nautilus. Najwcześniejsze ammonity pojawiają się w okresie dewonu, a ostatnie gatunki wymarły podczas epoki wyginięcia kredy-epoki. Ammonity są doskonałymi skamieniałościami indeksowymi, a często można połączyć warstwę skalną, w której określony gatunek lub rodzaj występuje w specyficznych okresach geologicznych. Ich skamieniałe kadłuby zazwyczaj przybierają postać planistek, choć były spirale spiralne i niespreparowane. Nazwa "amonit", od której pochodzi termin naukowy, została zainspirowana spiralnym kształtem ich skamieniałych muszli, które przypominają nieco ciasno zwiniętymi ramionami rogów. Pliniusz Starszy nazywał skamieniałościami tych zwierząt ammonis cornua, ponieważ egipski bóg Ammon był typowo przedstawiony na ramionach rogów. Często nazwa rodzaju amonitów kończy się w -cerach, co jest greckim "rogiem".
