Apostrof jest znakiem interpunkcyjnym, a czasami znakiem diakrytycznym, w językach używających alfabetu łacińskiego lub niektórych innych alfabetów. W języku angielskim ma trzy cele: ▪ oznaczenie pominięcia jednej lub kilku liter. ▪ Oznakowanie przypadku o zabójstwo. ▪ Oznakowanie przez niektórych jako mnogość artykułów pisanych, które nie są słowami ustalonymi w ortografii angielskiej. Według Oxford English Dictionary, "apostrof" pochodzi ostatecznie z greckiego ἡ ἀπόστροφος, poprzez łacinę i francuski. Apostrof wygląda tak samo, jak zamykający pojedynczy cytat, chociaż mają różne znaczenia. Apostrof również wygląda podobnie, ale nie jest taki sam, jak główny symbol, który jest używany do wskazywania pomiaru w stopach lub łukach, a także dla różnych celów matematycznych, a "koka, która reprezentuje zatrzymanie glottalne w językach polinezyjskich.
