W trakcie działań wojennych użyto dwóch broni nuklearnych, zarówno razy przez Stany Zjednoczone, jak i pod koniec II wojny światowej. W dniu 6 sierpnia 1945 r. Na japońskim mieście Hiroszima wybuchła bombę rozszczepialną o nazwie "Mały Chłopiec".
