Azeotrop jest mieszaniną dwóch lub więcej cieczy, których proporcje nie mogą być zmienione przez prostą destylację. Dzieje się tak dlatego, że gdy azeotrop jest gotowany, para ma takie same proporcje składników jak niegotowana mieszanina. Ze względu na to, że ich kompozycja nie ulega zmianie w wyniku destylacji, azeotropy nazywają się również stale wrzącymi mieszaninami. Słowo azeotropowe pochodzi od greckich słów ζέειν i τρόπος w połączeniu z prefiksem α-, aby nadać całościowe znaczenie, "nie ma zmiany na wrzeniu". Azeotropowe mieszanki par związków zostały udokumentowane, a wiele azeotropów trzech lub więcej związków jest także znane. Są to mieszaniny dwuskładnikowe mające ten sam skład w fazie ciekłej i gazowej i gotują w stałej temperaturze. W takim przypadku nie można oddzielić składników przez destylację frakcjonowaną. An azeotrope is a mixture of two or more liquids whose proportions cannot be altered by simple distillation. This happens because, when an azeotrope is boiled, the vapor has the same proportions of constituents as the unboiled mixture. Because their composition is unchanged by distillation, azeotropes are also called constant boiling mixtures. The word azeotrope is derived from the Greek words ζέειν and τρόπος combined with the prefix α- to give the overall meaning, "no change on boiling". Azeotropic mixtures of pairs of compounds have been documented, and many azeotropes of three or more compounds are also known. They are binary mixtures having the same composition in liquid and vapour phase and boil at a constant temperature. In such a case it is not possible to separate the components by fractional distillation. There are two types of azeotropes: minimum boiling azeotrope and maximum boiling azeotrope. A solution that shows greater positive deviation from Raoult's law forms a minimum boiling azeotrope at a specific composition.
