Biotechnologia to wykorzystanie żywych systemów i organizmów do opracowywania lub uzyskiwania przydatnych produktów lub "wszelkich zastosowań technologicznych, które wykorzystują systemy biologiczne, organizmy żywe lub ich pochodne, do wytwarzania lub modyfikowania produktów lub procesów do konkretnego zastosowania". W zależności od narzędzi i zastosowań często pokrywają się one z dziedzinami inżynierii biotechnologicznej i inżynierii biomedycznej. Od tysięcy lat ludzkość wykorzystuje biotechnologię w rolnictwie, produkcji żywności i medycynie. Wydaje się, że termin ten został w dużej mierze uznany przez węgierskiego inżyniera Károly Ereky. W końcu XX i na początku XXI wieku biotechnologia rozszerzyła się o nowe i zróżnicowane nauki, takie jak genomika, rekombinacyjne technologie genowe, immunologia stosowana oraz opracowywanie terapii farmaceutycznych i testów diagnostycznych.
