Kanton jest dzielnicą wojskową lub policyjną. Słowo kantonalne pochodzi od francuskiego kantonu oznaczającego róg lub dzielnicę, podobnie jak kantony Szwajcarii. W Azji Południowej termin "kanton" opisuje również stałe stacje wojskowe. Kantony można znaleźć w Bangladeszu, Indiach, Pakistanie, Afryce Południowej, Singapurze, Malezji, Ghanie, Sri Lance i Nepalu.
