Hodowla komórkowa jest złożonym procesem, w wyniku którego komórki hoduje się w kontrolowanych warunkach, na ogół poza ich naturalnym środowiskiem. W praktyce termin "hodowla komórkowa" odnosi się teraz do hodowli komórek pochodzących z wielorodzinnych eukariotów, zwłaszcza komórek zwierzęcych. Są jednak również kultury roślin, grzybów, owadów i drobnoustrojów, w tym wirusów, bakterii i protistów. Historyczny rozwój i metody hodowli komórkowej są ściśle powiązane z rozwojem tkanki i hodowli narządów. Hodowla komórek zwierzęcych stała się wspólną techniką laboratoryjną w połowie lat 20. XX wieku, ale pojęcie o utrzymaniu żywych linii komórkowych oddzielonych od ich pierwotnego źródła tkanek zostało odkryte w XIX wieku.
