Promieniowanie Cherenkowa, znane także jako promieniowanie Vavilov-Cherenkov, jest emitowane przez promieniowanie elektromagnetyczne, gdy naładowana cząstka przechodzi przez ośrodek dielektryczny z prędkością większą niż szybkość fali w tym medium. Charakterystycznym, niebieskim blaskiem podwodnego reaktora jądrowego jest promieniowanie Cherenkowa. Nazwa pochodzi od radzieckiego naukowca Pawła Aleksiejewicza Cherenkowa, laureata Nagrody Nobla z 1958 r., Który jako pierwszy wykrył to eksperymentalnie. Teorię tego efektu opracowano później w ramach specjalnej teorii względności Einsteina przez Igor Tamm i Ilyę Frank, która również podzieliła się nagrodą Nobla. Promieniowanie Cherenkowa było teoretycznie przewidywane przez angielski olbrzym Oliver Heaviside w gazetach opublikowanych w latach 1888-1889.
