Chiralność
Chiralność / kaɪrælɪtiː / jest właściwością asymetrii ważną w kilku gałęziach nauki. Chiralność wyrazów pochodzi z greckiego, χειρ, "strony", znanego obiektu chiralnego. Obiekt lub system jest chiralny, jeśli nie jest identyczny z jego odbiciem lustrzanym, to znaczy, że nie można go nałożić na siebie. Chiralny obiekt i jego lustrzane odbicie nazywane są enancjomorfami lub, jeśli odnoszą się do cząsteczek, enancjomerów. Obiekt niechiralny nazywany jest achiralem i może być nałożony na jego lustrzane odbicie. Termin ten został po raz pierwszy użyty przez lorda Kelvina w 1893 r. W drugim wykładzie Roberta Boyle'a na uniwersyteckim uniwersytecie Oxford University, który został opublikowany w 1894 r. Nazywam dowolną figurę geometryczną lub grupę punktów "chiral" i mówię, że ma chiralność jeśli jego obraz w lustrze płaskim, najlepiej zrealizowanym, nie może być zbliżony do siebie. Ręce ludzkie są chyba najbardziej powszechnie uznanym przykładem chiralności: lewa ręka to nie nadający się do złudzenia obraz lustrzany prawej ręki; niezależnie od tego jak obie ręce są zorientowane, nie jest możliwe, aby wszystkie najważniejsze cechy obydwu rąk się zbiegały.
