Chlamydia jest rodzajem bakterii i klasy, których członkowie są obowiązkowymi wewnątrzkomórkowymi patogenami. Wiele chlamydiów współistnieje w stanie bezobjawowym w obrębie konkretnych gospodarzy i powszechnie uważa się, że gospodarze zapewniają naturalny zbiornik dla tych gatunków. Cały znany chlamydia rozwija się tylko przez infekowanie eukariotycznych komórek gospodarza. Są one małe lub mniejsze od wielu wirusów. Chlamydia jest replikowana wewnątrz komórek gospodarza i jest określana jako wewnątrzkomórkowe. Większość wewnątrzkomórkowych chlamydiów znajduje się w cieczy inkluzyjnej lub w próżni. Poza komórkami przetrwają jedynie jako pozakomórkowa forma infekcyjna. Chlamydia może rosnąć tylko wtedy, gdy ich komórki gospodarza rosną. Zatem chlamydia nie może być rozmnażana w bakteryjnych mediach w laboratorium klinicznym. Chlamydia są najbardziej izolowane, choć nadal znajdują się w komórce gospodarza. Cavalier-Smith stwierdził, że Chlamydiae wchodzą w skład klastycznego Planktobacteria w większym clade Gracilicutes.
