Klasa społeczna, podobnie jak w społeczeństwie klasowym, jest zbiorem pojęć w naukach społecznych i teorii politycznej skoncentrowanych na modelach stratyfikacji społecznej, w których ludzie są pogrupowane w szereg hierarchicznych kategorii społecznych, najczęściej wśród górnych, średnich i niższe klasy. Klasa jest podstawowym przedmiotem analizy socjologów, polityków, antropologów i historyków społecznych. Nie ma jednak zgody co do najlepszej definicji terminu "klasa", a termin ten ma inne znaczenie kontekstowe. Określenie "klasa społeczna" jest zwykle synonimem "klasy społeczno-ekonomicznej", określanej jako "osoby mające ten sam status społeczny, ekonomiczny lub edukacyjny", np. "Klasa robotnicza"; "wschodząca klasa profesjonalna". Akademicy wyróżniają jednak klasę społeczną i status społeczno-ekonomiczny, a pierwsi nawiązują do stosunkowo stabilnego kontekstu socjokulturowego, a drugie odnoszą się do aktualnej sytuacji społeczno-gospodarczej, a tym samym zmieniają się z biegiem czasu. Dokładne pomiary tego, co określa klasę społeczną w społeczeństwie, z czasem zmieniały się.
