Komputer jest urządzeniem ogólnego przeznaczenia, które można zaprogramować do automatycznego wykonywania arytmetycznych lub logicznych operacji. Początkowo były to wielkości dużego pomieszczenia, pochłaniające tyle samo mocy co kilkaset nowoczesnych komputerów osobistych. Nowoczesne komputery oparte na układach scalonych są miliony miliardów razy bardziej zdolne niż wczesne maszyny i zajmują ułamek przestrzeni.
