W psychologii konfabulacja to zakłócenie pamięci, definiowane jako produkcja osłabionych, zniekształconych lub niewłaściwie interpretowanych wspomnień o sobie i na świecie, bez świadomego zamiaru zwodzenia. Confabulation odróżnia się od kłamstwa, ponieważ nie ma zamiaru zwieść, a osoba nie wie, że informacje są fałszywe. Chociaż jednostki mogą przedstawiać rażące fałszywe informacje, konfabulacja może wydawać się spójna, wewnętrznie spójna i stosunkowo normalna. Osoby konfibrujące prezentują niepoprawne wspomnienia, od "subtelnych przemian do dziwacznych wytworów" i są ogólnie bardzo przekonani o ich wspomnieniach pomimo sprzecznych dowodów. Najbardziej znane przypadki konfabulacji są objawem uszkodzenia mózgu lub otępienia, takiego jak tętniak, choroba Alzheimera lub zespół Wernickego-Korsakoffa. Często wyróżnia się dwa typy konfabulacji: spontaniczne konflikty stanowią normalną odpowiedź na wadliwą pamięć, są powszechne zarówno w amnezie, jak i otępieniach i mogą stać się widoczne podczas testów pamięci. Spontaniczne konfabulacje nie występują w odpowiedzi na wskazówkę i wydają się być mimowolne.
