Cor pulmonale, znany również jako choroba serca płuc, to powiększenie i niewydolność prawej komory serca jako odpowiedź na zwiększoną oporność naczyniową lub wysokie ciśnienie krwi w płucach. Przewlekły torbiel mózgu powoduje zwykle przerost prawej komory, podczas gdy ostry obrzęk naczynioruchowy zazwyczaj powoduje rozszerzenie. Hipertrofia jest odpowiedzią adaptacyjną na długotrwały wzrost ciśnienia. Poszczególne komórki mięśniowe zwiększają się i zmieniają się, aby zwiększyć siłę skurczową wymaganą do przemieszczania krwi w celu zwiększenia odporności. Dilatacja jest rozciąganiem komory w odpowiedzi na ostre zwiększone ciśnienie, na przykład w wyniku zatoru płucnego lub ARDS. Aby zaklasyfikować jako pulmonologię korową, przyczyna musi pochodzić z układu krążenia płucnego. Dwie główne przyczyny to zmiany naczyniowe w wyniku uszkodzenia tkanek oraz przewlekły niedotlenienia naczyń płucnych. RVH z powodu wady systemowej nie jest klasyfikowany jako korpus płuc. Jeśli nie zostanie usunięty, cor pulmonale może prowadzić do śmierci. Serce i płuca są ze sobą bardzo skomplikowane. Kiedy serce jest dotknięte chorobą, płuca będą podążać za nim i odwrotnie.
