Krioterapia
Krioterapia jest miejscowym lub ogólnym zastosowaniem niskich temperatur w terapii medycznej. Krioterapia jest stosowana w leczeniu wielu łagodnych i złośliwych uszkodzeń tkanek, medycznie nazywanych zmianami. Określenie "krioterapia" pochodzi od greckiego kriju, oznaczającego zimno, a terapię oznacza lekarstwa. Krioterapia była stosowana już w XVII wieku. Jego celem jest zmniejszenie wzrostu i rozmnażania komórek, zwiększenie przeżywalności komórek, zmniejszenie stanu zapalnego, zmniejszenie bólu i skurczów, promowanie zwężenia naczyń krwionośnych, a przy ekstremalnych temperaturach zniszczenie komórek poprzez krystalizację cytosolu, czyli cieczy znajdującej się wewnątrz komórek , znany również jako płyn wewnątrzkomórkowy. Najbardziej znaczącym zastosowaniem tego pojęcia jest leczenie chirurgiczne, znane jako kriochirurgia. Inne terapie, które używają tego terminu to kriogeniczna terapia komorowa i terapia lodu.
