Gramatyka zależności jest klasą nowoczesnych teorii syntaktycznych, które opierają się na relacji zależności i które można śledzić przede wszystkim w pracy Lucien Tesnière. Relacja zależności odnosi się do czasownika jako strukturalnego środka całej struktury klauzuli. Wszystkie pozostałe jednostki syntaktyczne zależą bezpośrednio lub pośrednio od czasownika. Dyrekcje generalne różnią się od gramatyki struktury frazowej, ponieważ DG nie ma węzłów frazowych - chociaż wyrażają oni frazy. Struktura zależy od relacji między słowem a jego osobami zależnymi. Struktury zależne są bardziej płaskie niż struktury wyborcze częściowo dlatego, że nie posiadają składowej sformułowanej fraz sformułowanej i dlatego są one dobrze dostosowane do analizy języków z wolnym porządkiem słów, np. Czeskim i tureckim.
