Detergent jest środkiem powierzchniowo czynnym lub mieszaniną środków powierzchniowo czynnych o "właściwościach czyszczących w rozcieńczonych roztworach". Ich podwójna natura ułatwia mieszanie związków hydrofobowych z wodą. Ponieważ powietrze nie jest hydrofilowe, detergenty są również czynnikami spieniającymi w różnym stopniu.
