Dialektyka jest metodą argumentacji za rozwiązaniem niezgody, która od starożytności była filozofią europejską i indyjską. Słowo dialektyka pochodzi od starożytnej Grecji, a Plato w popularnych dialogach cieszył się popularnością. Debaty są wynikiem łączenia przekonania przeciwnika; udowodnienie poprawności swojego argumentu; lub udowodnienie argumentu przeciwnika błędnie. Debaty niekoniecznie wymagają szybkiego określenia wyraźnego zwycięzcę lub przegranego; jednak jasne zwycięzcy są często określani przez sędziego, jury lub konsensusu grupowego. Określenie dialektyka nie jest również synonimem retoryki terminowej, metody lub sztuki dyskursu, która ma na celu przekonanie, informowanie lub motywowanie odbiorców.
