Poszukiwacz kierunku radiowego jest urządzeniem służącym do kierowania do źródła radiowego. Podstawową ideą jest użycie dwóch lub więcej pomiarów tego samego sygnału, a następnie użyj niewielkich różnic między pomiarami, aby określić kierunek źródła. Kilka odrębnych pokoleń systemów RDF zostało wykorzystanych w czasie, po rozwoju nowej elektroniki. Wczesne systemy wykorzystywały mechanicznie obracane anteny, które porównywały siły sygnału w różnych kierunkach, a następnie kilka elektronicznych wersji tej samej koncepcji. Nowoczesne systemy stosują porównanie technik fazowych lub dopplerowych, które są na ogół łatwiejsze do zautomatyzowania. Systemy RDF można używać z dowolnym źródłem radiowym, chociaż wielkość anten odbiorczych jest funkcją długości fali sygnału - bardzo długie długości fal wymagają bardzo dużych anten i są powszechnie stosowane tylko w systemach naziemnych. Te długości fali są jednak bardzo przydatne do żeglugi morskiej, ponieważ mogą podróżować bardzo długo i "na horyzoncie", co jest cenne dla statków, gdy linia terenu może wynosić zaledwie kilkadziesiąt kilometrów.
