Odnalezienie kierunku lub kierunek fal radiowych odnosi się do pomiaru kierunku, z którego odebrany sygnał został przekazany. Może to odnosić się do radia lub innych form komunikacji bezprzewodowej. Łącząc informacje o kierunkach z dwóch lub więcej odpowiednio rozmieszczonych odbiorników, źródło transmisji może być umieszczone w przestrzeni przez triangulację. Systemy RDF można używać z dowolnym źródłem radiowym, chociaż wielkość anten odbiorczych jest funkcją długości fali sygnału - bardzo długie długości fal wymagają bardzo dużych anten i są powszechnie stosowane tylko w systemach naziemnych. Te długości fali są jednak bardzo przydatne w nawigacji radiowej, ponieważ mogą one przemieszczać się bardzo długo na horyzoncie, co jest cenne dla statków, gdy linia wzroku może wynosić zaledwie kilkadziesiąt kilometrów. Do celów antenowych, gdzie horyzont może rozciągać się na setki kilometrów, można używać wyższych częstotliwości, co pozwala na użycie znacznie mniejszych anten.
