Durometr jest jednym z kilku miar twardości materiału. Twardość może być definiowana jako odporność materiału na stałe wcięcie. Skalę durometryczną zdefiniował Albert F. Shore, który opracował urządzenie pomiarowe do pomiaru twardości Shore'a w latach dwudziestych XX wieku.
