Ekorozwój dotyczy zwykle aktów przemocy popełnionych w celu wspierania przyczyn ekologicznych lub środowiskowych, wobec osób lub ich własności. Eko-terroryzm określa Federalny Urząd dochodzeniowo-śledczy jako "użycie lub zagrożone użyciem przemocy wobec osób lub mienia o charakterze agresywnym, zorientowanej na ochronę środowiska, z powodów politycznych ze względów środowiskowych lub skierowanych do odbiorców, często o charakterze symbolicznym ". FBI przyznało, że w latach 2003-2008 złoŜyły 200 milionów dolarów szkody majątkowej na rzecz eko-terrorystów, a większość stanów w USA wprowadziła ustawodawstwa mające na celu eko-terroryzm. Krytycy tego używania tego terminu twierdzą, że została ona zdefiniowana w celu oszukańczych działaczy, a termin ten byłby bardziej stosowany w celu opisania szkodliwych dla środowiska działań korporacji.
