Eterotherm, od greckiego εκτός "outside" i θερμός "hot", jest organizmem, w którym wewnętrzne fizjologiczne źródła ciepła mają relatywnie małe lub bardzo nieznaczne znaczenie w kontrolowaniu temperatury ciała. Takie organizmy opierają się na środowiskowych źródłach ciepła, co pozwala im działać w bardzo ekonomicznych stadiach metabolicznych. Niektóre zwierzęta żyją w środowiskach, w których temperatura jest praktycznie stała, co jest typowe dla regionów oceanu otchłanianego. Natomiast w przypadku, gdy temperatura zmienia się tak bardzo, że ogranicza czynności fizjologiczne innych rodzajów ektotermii, wiele gatunków zazwyczaj szuka zewnętrznych źródeł ciepła lub schronienia przed ciepłem; na przykład wiele gadów reguluje ich temperaturę ciała, krążąc w słońcu, lub szukając cienia, gdy jest to konieczne, oprócz całego innego mechanizmu termoregulacji behawioralnej. W przeciwieństwie do ektotermii, endotermy polegają głównie, głównie na ciepło z wewnętrznych procesów metabolicznych. W ectotherms wahania temperatury otoczenia mogą wpływać na temperaturę ciała.
