Elektrostatyka
Elektrostatyka jest odrębną dziedziną fizyki, która zajmuje się zjawiskami i właściwościami stacjonarnych lub wolno poruszających się ładunków elektrycznych bez przyspieszania. Od klasycznej starożytności wiadomo, że niektóre materiały takie jak bursztyn przyciągają lekkie cząstki po pocieraniu. Greckie słowo bursztynu, ήλεκτρον elektron, było źródłem słowa "elektryczność". Zjawiska elektrostatyczne wynikają z sił, które wywierają na siebie ładunki elektryczne. Takie siły są opisane przez prawo Coulomb. Mimo że siły indukowane elektrostatycznie wydają się raczej słabe, siła elektrostatyczna między np. elektron i proton, które razem tworzą atom wodoru, jest o 36 rzędów wielkości silniejsza od siły grawitacji działającej między nimi. Istnieje wiele przykładów zjawisk elektrostatycznych, od tych, które są tak proste, jak przyciąganie plastikowej folii do ręki po wyjęciu jej z opakowania, do pozornie naturalnego wybuchu silosów zbożowych, uszkodzenia podzespołów elektronicznych podczas produkcji, operacji fotokopiarki. Elektrostatyka polega na gromadzeniu się ładunku na powierzchni przedmiotów w wyniku kontaktu z innymi powierzchniami.
