Wartość oczekiwana
W teorii prawdopodobieństwa, oczekiwana wartość odnosi się, intuicyjnie, do wartości zmiennej losowej, której "oczekiwano" można było stwierdzić, czy można powtarzać proces zmiennej losowej nieskończenie wiele razy i wziąć średnią z otrzymanych wartości. Bardziej formalnie oczekiwana wartość to ważona średnia wszystkich możliwych wartości. Innymi słowy, każda możliwa wartość, jaką może przyjąć zmienna losowa, jest pomnożona przez przypisaną mu wagę, a uzyskane produkty są następnie dodawane razem w celu znalezienia oczekiwanej wartości. Z rygorystycznego teoretycznego punktu widzenia oczekiwana wartość zmiennej ciągłej jest całką zmiennej losowej w odniesieniu do jej prawdopodobieństwa. Ponieważ prawdopodobieństwo nigdy nie może być ujemne, oczekiwana wartość jest proporcjonalna do obszaru pod krzywą wykresu wartości zmiennej losowej pomnożonej przez prawdopodobieństwo tej wartości. Tak więc dla ciągłej zmiennej losowej oczekiwana wartość jest granicą sumy ważonej, tzn. Całką.
