Haematoksylina, hematoksylina, naturalny czarny 1 lub C.I. 75290 wyodrębnia się z drewna liściastego. Po utlenieniu tworzy hematynę, związek, który tworzy silnie barwione kompleksy z niektórymi jonami metali, a najbardziej znaczącymi są sole Fe (III) i Al (III). Przed badaniem pod mikroskopem wykorzystuje się kompleksy metal-hematemetynowe do plamienia jąder komórek.
