Halofil
Halofile to organizmy, które żyją w wysokich stężeniach soli. Są rodzajem skrajnego organizmu. Nazwa pochodzi od greckiego słowa "salt-loving". Chociaż większość halofili sklasyfikowanych jest w domenie Archaea, istnieją też bakteryjne halofile i niektóre eukariota, takie jak alga Dunaliella salina lub grzyb Wallemia ichthyophaga. Niektóre dobrze znane gatunki wydzielają czerwony kolor z związków karotenoidu, zwłaszcza bakterio-rodomkiny. Halofil można znaleźć w dowolnym miejscu ze stężeniem soli pięciokrotnie wyższym niż stężenie soli w oceanie, takie jak Wielkie Jeziora Salt Lake w Utah, Jezioro Owens w Kalifornii, Morze Martwe oraz w stawach odparowywujących.
