Halothane jest znieczuleniem ogólnym wziewnym. Jej nazwa IUPAC to 2-bromo-2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroetan. Jest to jedyny inhalacyjny środek znieczulający zawierający atom bromu; kilka innych środków znieczulających chlorowcowanych nie zawiera atomu bromu i zawiera atomy fluoru i chloru obecne w halotanie. Jest bezbarwny i przyjemny, ale niestabilny w świetle. Jest pakowany w ciemno zabarwionych butelkach i zawiera 0,01% tymolimeru jako środka stabilizującego. To jest w Liście Podstawowych Leków Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia, lista najważniejszych leków potrzebnych w podstawowym systemie opieki zdrowotnej. Jego zastosowanie w krajach rozwiniętych zostało niemal całkowicie zastąpione przez nowsze środki do inhalacji znieczulenia.
