Heksametr
Heksameter to metryczna linia wiersza składająca się z sześciu stóp. Był to standardowy epicki licznik w klasycznej literaturze greckiej i łacińskiej, na przykład w Iliadzie, Odysei i Aeneidzie. Jego użycie w innych gatunkach kompozycji obejmuje satyry Horace'a, metamorfozy Owidza i hymny Orfeusza. Zgodnie z grecką mitologią hexameter został wynaleziony przez boga Hermesa. W klasycznym heksametrze sześć stóp spełnia następujące zasady: ▪ stopa może składać się z dwóch długich sylab, spondy; lub długie i dwie krótkie sylaby, daktylowe. ▪ Cztery pierwsze stopy mogą zawierać jeden z nich. ▪ Piąta jest prawie zawsze daktylem, a ostatnim musi być spondee. Krótką sylabą jest sylaba z krótką samogłoską i jedną spółgłoską na końcu. Długa sylaba jest sylabą, która ma długą samogłoskę, dwie lub więcej spółgłosek na końcu, lub oba te elementy. Jednak odstępy pomiędzy słowami nie są liczone, więc na przykład "kapelusz" jest zwykle krótki, ale długo jest w "hat throw" z powodu "th" w następnym słowie.
