Heksameter to metryczna linia wiersza składająca się z sześciu stóp. Był to standardowy epicki licznik w klasycznej literaturze greckiej i łacińskiej, na przykład w Iliadzie, Odysei i Aeneidzie. Jednak odstępy pomiędzy słowami nie są liczone, więc na przykład "kapelusz" jest zwykle krótki, ale długo jest w "hat throw" z powodu "th" w następnym słowie.
